Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

Glass Sword || Victoria Aveyard || 444 pages

Top Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Fiction

Synopsis (from Goodreads): If there’s one thing Mare Barrow knows, it’s that she’s different.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness that has grown in her soul.

The Siren || Kiera Cass || 327 pages

Top 3 Genres: Young Adult, Romance, Fantasy

Synopsis (from Goodreads): “You must never do anything that might expose our secret. This means that, in general, you cannot form close bonds with humans. You can speak to us, and you can always commune with the Ocean, but you are deadly to humans. You are, essentially, a weapon. A very beautiful weapon. I won’t lie to you, it can be a lonely existence, but once you are done, you get to live. All you have to give, for now, is obedience and time…”

The same speech has been given hundreds of times to hundreds of beautiful girls who enter the sisterhood of sirens. Kahlen has lived by these rules for years now, patiently waiting for the life she can call her own. But when Akinli, a human, enters her world, she can’t bring herself to live by the rules anymore. Suddenly the life she’s been waiting for doesn’t seem nearly as important as the one she’s living now.

And the votes are in!

My apologies for being late on the announcement. Having technical difficulties with my laptop :/

So I have calculated the votes for my next read and the winner is…

Drumroll please…

… A tie! Between Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard and Shatter Me by Tarereh Mafi. Even Luna’s excited.

And rather than have a tie breaker, I have decided to read them both. I will be flipping a coin to see which one I will read first but look forward to a review for both books in the next two weeks 🙂

My February Owlcrate has arrived! =D

So my schedule for posting has been happily altered this week thanks to my recently acquired Owlcrate! For those of you who do not know, Owlcrate is a monthly subscription box for the book-lover and bibliophile. Every month a genre is chosen from parallel worlds to myths and legends to leading ladies. The home-run company then mails out thousands of boxes containing a newly released YA novel as well as a bunch (typically 3-5 depending on size and cost) of additional goodies pertaining to the chosen genre of the month as shown below. (And they have recently added Funko pops to their assortment!)

This month’s theme was sci-fi romance, and since completing Marissa Meyers’ Lunar Chronicles I have been awaiting something related to the series. I could not be happier to have received my tote… that is until I noticed a second book hidden among my treasures. That’s right. A second book! In addition to containing The Love That Split the World by Emily Henry, my Owlcrate box also included a copy of H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine. Yes I screamed so loud in excitement I scared both my boyfriend and the cat. And yes, I did a very elaborate happy dance throughout the apartment to the tune of I Dream of Genie’s theme song. Don’t judge me.

For all you fellow avid readers, book collectors, or just general fangirls and guys, I highly recommend signing up. I will forewarn you, there is a waitlist. I waited two months before finally receiving an email saying they had a spot available. The only downside to them being a smaller company =\ But it is worth it! If not just for the new book each month but for the awesome treats that come with them. Below are only some of the few other things I have gotten over the months including my patronus chapstick, books to check out journal, and fairy tale tea.

I also need to say, Owlcrate is not the only provider of these services! A few other related boxes that might pique you and your library’s interest are IllumicrateThe YA Chronicles, and Uppercase Box. So go check them out!
